On Saturday, February 6, 2021 we will host the 3rd Annual Powerful Learners Conference as a virtual event, focused on how we can reenergize, reconnect and refresh as educators to keep students feeling safe and supported in this most unusual time. Together, we will build capacity in our schools and community spaces for honoring the unique needs and gifts of our students, setting the stage for them to thrive and break cycles of structural inequity.

Student Choice and Voice in Anti-Racist Teaching

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

In this session, we will investigate why student choice and voice are essential to anti-racist teaching and learning. After setting up the importance of this framework, we will go through a Design Thinking Process and examine how this framework can be used in high school and middle school classrooms to empower students. Participants will engage in the Design Thinking Process and strategize how to do this with their own students. The session will model how to approach this with students and in this way accommodate diverse learning styles and experience levels for adults, just as educators will have to do in turn with their own students.

Objectives:
Participants will gain an understanding of frameworks to interrogate power dynamics in the classroom to enact anti-racist teaching practices;
Participants will leave with concrete examples and strategies for implementing these principles in their own classrooms.
