On Saturday, February 6, 2021 we will host the 3rd Annual Powerful Learners Conference as a virtual event, focused on how we can reenergize, reconnect and refresh as educators to keep students feeling safe and supported in this most unusual time. Together, we will build capacity in our schools and community spaces for honoring the unique needs and gifts of our students, setting the stage for them to thrive and break cycles of structural inequity.

Understanding and Mitigating Bias

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

What is implicit bias? How does implicit bias shape the learning environment? Implicit biases are attitudes or stereotypes that are activated unconsciously and involuntarily. Social scientists believe that implicit biases are learned as young as age 3 and are influenced by stereotypes perpetrated by the media, or beliefs transmitted by families, peers, and other community members. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the scholarship and practices necessary to identify, respond to and mitigate the effects of bias on students, educators, and families. This content is appropriate for educators at all experience levels and teaching contexts.

Objectives:
1. Understand the ways in which implicit bias operates and shapes how historically marginalized students are viewed.
2. Learn how to mitigate implicit bias in the classroom.
