On Saturday, February 6, 2021 we will host the 3rd Annual Powerful Learners Conference as a virtual event, focused on how we can reenergize, reconnect and refresh as educators to keep students feeling safe and supported in this most unusual time. Together, we will build capacity in our schools and community spaces for honoring the unique needs and gifts of our students, setting the stage for them to thrive and break cycles of structural inequity.

Culturally Authentic Read Alouds and Literature Circles
It is a misconception that read alouds are for primary school children only. In fact, this simple
practice is a great equalizer for all learners across all grade levels. Reading aloud targets the
skills of auditory learners, establishes a basis for discourse, and motivates students to read
independently. Through read alouds, students learn how to use language to make sense of the
world, improve their information processing skills, are exposed to new vocabulary, and are
guided through comprehension.

More specifically, when read alouds consist of culturally authentic literature, benefits are seen
both academically and personally. Through this genre, students find relatable themes; and
because they are happening to the character, students become more comfortable discussing
issues as they arise. Reading aloud culturally authentic literature promotes self-awareness,
diversity, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging. Students lived experiences are not only seen and
heard through this genre, they are also invited into the classroom space.

As we read this genre aloud to students, they are encouraged to share their connections, listen
to other perspectives, and engage in discourse that deepens their understanding of themselves
and the world. And soon, by establishing a foundation of discourse and community through
read louds, moving into literatures circles with similar expectations and guidelines becomes a
breeze.
